Here we have magical electronic beats courtesy of Portland, OR. Here we have genre smashing, imagination conjuring tunes, offering a multi-coloured bazaar of audio creations. It’s Coming To Get You. Here is Jonah Bechtolt’s third solo product, also known as the other half from The Blow. That means that this is The Blow minus the female vocals? Right? Well yes in that it doesn’t have the depth of lyrical ability that Khaela Maricich possesses. Instead it is more focused on rhythmical craftings (you can tell he used to be a drummer) and the upbeat banter of different ideas parallel to each other.
The album opens with ‘So Post ‘Em All’, not the best track on the album but a nice way to ease into the further onslaught of Bechtolt’s digital craziness. It’s a down beat affair with a juicy sounding drum tapping beat – that sounds very like a Blow song. There is also a light ebb of guitar and some vocals dotted around. Other songs on the album are more of a pop affair with catchy choruses such as Knightrider bassline-alike ‘See A Penny (Pick It Up)’, smooth talking inspirer ‘I Believe In You’ and riot starter ‘Women of the World’.
If you say it out loud you can make it happen. ‘Platinum’ is a song that is a testament to Bechtolt’s true potential, as soon as he teams up with a vocalist, boom! The good tune formula is activated and you know you are in for something special. In this case fellow glitch popper CA’s Bobby Birdman takes vocal duties and creates a song worth throwing into a mix selection for a friend. Part 80s synth, part glitchy goodness. The other track that stands out is the collaboration with Eat Tapes, going down the electro route, whipping up a storm in a reservoir - the most club worthy tune here.
And just when you thought that the whole beat tip was getting a little, well, repetitive, Bechtolt throws a flaming arrow at the sails and gives us ‘Drawing In The Dark’, half minimalist, half experimental techno sounding, reminiscent of Leila (from Aphex Twin’s Rephlex record label). Yep, Yacht is originally different and thought provoking. But just where is he coming from when he sings on album closer Women of the world takeover, if you don’t the world will come to end? That’s where you step up and choose. Listen with intrigue.
