Thank Dead Oceans and Absorb the Sound of Phosphorescent
By: Christy Mannering
Ok, the quantum mechanics of Phosphorescent goes like this: E = They Rock. Scientifically speaking, their music is a puzzle. Matthew Houck is the main man of Phosphorescent and he pieces together a haunting sound quite successfully. This is most likely why the label Dead Oceans has signed the band.
New to Dead Oceans, but not new to the scene, Phosphorescent already has two full length albums and an EP. Comparable to the likes of Shearwater and Okkervil River, the music has a lingering, eerie quality that gives each song an almost supernatural feel. Matthew Houck’s unique vocal style holds him apart from others, giving Phosphorescent a fresh sound.
A new album for Dead Oceans is in the works for a Fall 2007 release and Phosphorescent is already setting up dates to get out and perform. They’ll be in New York at the Cinders Gallery on the first Saturday of July; by July 27th Houck will head down to his hometown of Athens, Georgia for a show at the 40 Watt Club. It’s likely more shows will be scheduled for the Fall to promote the upcoming album. Check out the Daytrotter session!
