An experimentalist to the core, Hauschka, aka Volker Bertelmann, sees the playing of the piano as just too undemanding. Volker deconstructs the sonic quality of his music by changing the piano, i.e. modifying to his liking. He calls it the prepared piano.
Now he's preparing to take the show to Japan in January, hitting international hot spots like Tokyo and Kyoto.
Volker Bertelmann works in the spirit of John Cage or Henry Cowell to deconstruct the music on a wholistic level in order to create something entirely new sounding. Remember how Pink Floyd used to deconstruct pianos to tug at their strings in the studio? It's the same sort of vibe... poking around in an instrument to make it sound like sounds it wasn't intended to make.
