In a sign of the times, album sales slowed once again in 2007, according to a new report released by Nielsen SoundScan. All in all, album sales were down 15% from the previous year.
The number of album sales was 500.5 million, the lowest number of sales since Nielsen started tracking this sort of thing in 1993.
Where oh where have all of the album buyers gone? Online of course, and not just in the form of free downloads or piracy, although those types of downloads invariably played a role. Legitimate paid downloads rose 45% from 588.2 million in 2006 to 844.2 million in 2007. These numbers cover individual songs bought and not total albums bought.
eMusic saw a fair number of those downloads, as they've just announced that they passed the 400,000 mark for number of subscribers, 50,000 of them signing up in the final month of the year.
