The Coachella Music Festival has named its 2008 line up, all the way from Mexico City (?) on Martin Luther King Day (?), and the names are in. I'm not sure why they chose to release the news from outside the states, or on a day when many Americans aren't at work and the news media isn't hitting full stride. Somebody should get these guys a (new?) publicist.
At any rate, the initial reaction to the Coachella line up seems to be a yawn.
But before all of the negativity flows out of the web like a tidal wave of yawning pessimism, there are some interesting names like the Verve, Portishead, Spiritualized, Kraftwerk (maybe they'll play the song Spacelab!), and Animal Collective. All in all a solid line up, but missing the key special band reunifications of years past. Oh yeah, Roger Waters will perform Dark Side of the Moon, but without the rest of Pink Floyd. Now THAT would have been a big reunited experience.
Coachella will happen on April 25 - 27 at the Empire Polo Field in Indio, California. Tickets will go on sale on January 25th at 10:00 AM PST. 3-Day passes are $269.00. Single day tickets are $90.00
Also announced today was a new festival by Coachella organizers AEG Live/Goldenvoice on the east coast, but distinctly separate from the Coachella festival. The east coast show will be called the All Points West Music & Arts Festival, and will happen in Jersey City at the Liberty State Park on August 8 - 10. The popular rumor of the moment is that Radiohead will perform at the Jersey show.
