The Reading festival, once known for breaking bands big to a European audience, the site of the famous Kurt Cobain wheelchair incident is joining with the Leeds festival in a return to its roots. The festival organizer Melvin Benn has announced the intention to drop the corporate sponsorship recently provided by Carling under the moniker of the Carling Weekend.
Melvin Benn recently told BBC 6 "I wanted it to be - as I'm sure fans wanted it to be - slightly less corporate. I wanted to reclaim the name Reading Festival and the name Leeds Festival. I wanted them to return to their roots, so to speak.I didn't want the events to be called after a sponsor. I'm not asking another sponsor to come in." Melvin Benn is the managing director of concert organiser Festival Republic.
The festival(s) also dropped the hint bomb by saying that three american headliners will be at this year's joint festivals, leaving plenty of speculation time between now and August for endless rumors, strategizing, and forum-baiting episodes.
Thew Reading and Leeds festivals will take place on August 22nd through 24th, with performers jetting back and forth to play both locations over the weekend.
