The Shortlist Music Prize announced its final version of contendees for the 2008 prize last week, and it includes diverse names like Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, Spoon, and Feist. The winner will be announced in February.
This year it's the international list ... seven listees are from outside the USA.
The Shortlist has been around since 2001, barring that whole Pantheon Music Prize thing, and gives an award to artists who have not had their album reach gold status but still offered up quality work. The idea is to focus on albums that are bright and creative, that lie just underneath mass popularity but are still well known and celebrated. They get judged by jury of their peers (a.k.a. the Listmakers) like other musicians and journalists.
This year's Listmakers are Gary Lightbody (Snow Patrol) and Ronnie Vannucci (the Killers), journalist Rev. Moose (CMJ), radio DJ Chris Douridas (KCRW) and the hosts of Hunnypot Internet Radio.
Past winners include some of the most valued artists of today, like Sigur Rós, Damien Rice, TV on the Radio, and Sufjan Stevens.
