Bowerbirds are soaring high these days what with their recent gigs and recent debut album, Hymns for a Dark Horse, you might have thought they were just out doing their thing and making a name for themselves. Well, no, they had to go and get signed to a record label, too. Gosh!
Dead Oceans signed Bowerbirds claiming “it is always fun to sign a band that you were a fan of first.” So it’s not enough to sign them, you also have to compliment them constantly. But they deserve the ego boost because they are an awesome band. Now they are label mates with artists such as Bishop Allen, Citay, The Explorers Club, Phosphorescent and White Hinterland.
An expanded version of the Bowerbirds debut will release this Spring and to entice more buyers they are adding two “top secret” bonus tracks. You’ll be able to buy a CD or vinyl copy across the country, whereas last summer when the EP was released and only managed to hit eight record stores in the US.
What you can expect from these guys is a melting pot of musical textures and styles. Beth Tacular, Mark Paulson and Phil Moore each contribute vocals to the tracks, but they each have their specialties as well. Phil Moore enjoys the hi-hat and tambourine. Mark Paulson is amazing on his pedal keyboard. And then there is the fantastic accordion music, from band member Beth Tacular, which is not often heard in music these days.
