These United States Tour
the United States

By: Jenny An

Combine two music writers, 30 studio musicians from the Midwest and a couple impressive producers and what do you get?

After playing 300 shows with acts like Page France, Georgie James and Califone, These United States is finally releasing their first album. A Picture of the Three of Us at the Gate to the Garden of Eden will be out on March 3rd via United Interests. The 36-minute album was produced by Chad Clark (Fugazi, Dismemberment Plan) and T.J. Lipple (Aloha). Other artists involved include Tom Hantow, Josh Read, Mark Charles, Josh Wenk, Winston Yu and Robby Cosenza.

The brain child of Jesse Elliott, a gonzo reporter, and David Strackany, better known as Paleo for his Song Diary (where he wrote about 365 songs over 365 days), sounds like Mason Jennings with the guitar stripped down, a keyboard thrown in and a dash of weird for good measure.

The writing skills of Elliott and Strackany are put to good use in These United States's poetic, sing-speak lyrics. "Calculating the logistics of lust, of when unspoken things could happen between us," Elliott sings in "First Sight".

So what does a band which made a name out of a touring schedule do in support of their new album? Tour the United States, of course. With three dates at South by Southwest, they will be touring across the country through April.
