Billed as a "power trio" and "swaggering guitar rock," Pontiak make the kind of sounds that happen when you channel your guitar chord through thick, sludgy molasses on its way to the amplifier. The result is a slow, methodical but determined sound that's deep and booming.
It's also a project of the brothers three: Van (guitar, lead vocals), Lain (drums, vocals), and Jennings Carney (bass, organ, vocals). They hail from Brooklyn by way of Virginia.
After signing to Thrill Jockey Records earlier this year, the band is preparing a re-release of Sun on Sun, which originally came out in 2006 on Fireproof Records. It will be released on September 9th.
Here's what Thrill Jockey had to say about the recording of Sun on Sun "Sticking with this tradition, the Carneys honed the songs that make up Sun On Sun while touring and didn't waste much time tinkering in the studio. Most of the tracks were recorded in only a few takes, if not the first and they strived to create an album that flowed like a live performance." They recorded the album in a farmhouse in rural Virginia in four days time.
You can listen to tracks from their upcoming album on MySpace right now, namely "Sun on Sun", "Shell Skull", and "White Hands". Check out the sounds below:
