Rob Garza and Eric Hilton of Thievery Corporation are mad as hell and they're not gonna take it anymore. They're releasing their new album, titled Radio Retaliation on September 23rd on their own ESL Music label.
Although it seems only a short time ago that lots of music was overtly political in a way that had substance, recent times have lacked a true political grit in terms of standing up against the status quo and the onslaught of safely packaged Big Media messages that seem to lull the country off to sleep.
"Radio Retaliation is definitely a more overt political statement," says Garza of Thievery Corporation. "There's no excuse for not speaking out at this point, with the suspension of habeas corpus, outsourced torture, illegal wars of aggression, fuel, food, and economic crises. It's hard to close your eyes and sleep while the world is burning around you. If you are an artist, this is the most essential time to speak up."
Check out the list of their partners in crime: Sleepy Wonder, Lou Lou, and Notch, Femi Kuti, Brazilian star vocalist and guitarist Seu Jorge, Anushka Shankar, Jana Andevska, and Chuck Brown.
They'll also release something on iTunes in the run up to the album date, which will feature music not available on the album.
They've launched a stream from the album at their MySpace.
