After signing to Mint Records earlier this year, Edmonton's Hot Panda will release their debut album for the label on February 10th. Volcano...Bloody Volcano encompasses all of the hot Hot Panda elements, as they call them: "Brit pop, gypsy swing, opera solos, Robert Pollard style lo-fi jangles, and glammy Roxy Music keyboards."
Check out the stream below of the song "Cold Hands, Chapped Lips" from this Summer's EP of the same name. It poses as a seemingly innocent and naive bit of indie pop until the regular spastic break downs of almost-Sebadoh like intensity, back in the Eric Gaffney days.
With a curious name like Hot Panda, you have to wonder what's lurking under the hood. What does it mean? Is it intended to be a come-on, as in "Your panda looks so HOT," or is it more of a commentary on the well being of the animal: "Your panda looks hot, maybe we should get it some water?"
Naming intentions aside, it turns out the band's sound is as hard to define. "When you get compared, in the same breath, to everything from Daniel Johnson to the Talking Heads, you know you have a sound that's hard to pin down," reads the Mint Records web site.
