Details are emerging on Sonic Youth's much anticipated release The Eternal, due out later this year. The album marks the bands return from the corporate sector of the music world, as they've signed with Matador Records.
So far, it sounds like the band is taking a fresh look at some old methods, to pull good ideas from the past, but in a new way with new ideas.
"When I started writing, I was immersed in listening to the Wipers. 'No Way,' the first song we recorded, has a total Wipers vibe, if the Wipers were a No Wave band. We're super inspired to make a fresh start. We're glad to be dealing with a label that loves songs. It's rock-centric, but still experimental. We're still Sonic Youth. I still don't know how to play the guitar," said Thurston Moore in an interview with Billboard.
From various online reports, it sounds like the band is wrapping up the studio work, and that the album is tentatively due out in June on Matador Records.
