Tortoise Take New Approach to Developing Material on New Album

By: Spacelab Research Staff

Tortoise will come back to life in April, with an as of yet untitled new release on Thrill Jockey Records. It will be the first album of new material since 2004's Its All Around You, and the follow up to A Lazarus Taxon, the box set they released in 2006.

They've been working the songs over the past year, changing their normal songwriting process to developing material in front of a live audience first, and recording it second. This is the opposite of their past approaches.

"Normally we're making an album and then trying to figure out how to play it, and realizing that they're some real problems," bassist Doug McCombs told Billboard.

They'll be touring this Spring and Summer.
