New Sonic Youth Album
Becomes Official

By: Spacelab Research Staff

The first Sonic Youth album of the post-major label, post-corporate era of the band has been made official ... another sign that we are living in a truly new paradigm. This will be Sonic Youth's first album with their new home of Matador Records. It's titled The Eternal, and will be released on double vinyl, compact disc, and download.

The announcement from Matador reads "Recorded through November and December of last year at the band’s Echo Canyon West studio in Hoboken, NJ, ‘The Eternal’ features many firsts for a Sonic Youth album, including a number of shared vocals between Kim, Thurston, and Lee, and the studio debut of former Pavement/Dustdevils bassist Mark Ibold, a member of Sonic Youth’s touring band for the past few years."

It was co-produced by John Agnello and the band, who also produced their previous album Rather Ripped.

On April 18th, a vinyl split-single with Beck will be released prior to the album release. Each act will cover each other's music, with Sonic Youth performing Beck's "Pay No Mind" (from Mellow Gold), and Beck performs Sonic Youth's "Green Light."

The External will be released on June 9th.
