Everything You Need to Know About the New iPhone 3GS and Music

By: Spacelab Research Staff

The new Apple iPhone 3GS was properly introduced Monday, minus Steve Jobs, at a geek conference called WWDC in San Francisco.

The new iPhone 3GS has some great new features: hands-free voice control (for song changes on the fly while driving, etc) , an improved camera now with video (for recording live gigs and uploading the shows while you're still at the show), and copy and paste (for music bloggers who like to post press releases rather than write their own content).

The new Voice Control feature lets you speak commands like telling the iPhone to play certain songs, artists, playlists, or even builing Genius playlists based on whatever song your hearing (this one's got potential). This will be great for driving. You can dial phone numbers by voice, too.

The iPhone itself is faster and has faster performance, meaning less waiting as you jump from one app to another. It also dowmloads from the web at a faster speed, which will let you watch more videos and listen to more music instead of waiting a long time for a download.

The new prices are low for iPhone virgins: $99, $199, $299 for the 8 GB, 16GB and 32GB models repectively. Already own an iPhone? You'll pay more at plus $200 on any of those prices, just for being a loyal customer. Let the web revolt begin.

How much are you gonna pay for getting on the web with your new iPhone? Turns out that it might be somewhere between acceptable and expensive. Current speculation rests between $60-$70 a month.

The battery is more robust, for nine hours of Wi-Fi web access, 30 hours of audio playback, 10 hours of video playback, or 12 hours of 2G phone time and five hours of 3G phone time.

Apple Store employee Nelson gives us the marketing speak combined with iPhone overview that we love.

Other NICE features:
The battery lasts a third longer this time
You can tether the iPhone to another computer to use it as your internet connection
The faster web connection is due to a newer format called 7.2 Mbps HSDPA
The Voice Control feature lets tell your phone what to do
Camera jumps from 2 to 3 megapixels
Camera has autofocus and a macro lens
Camera has a “tap to focus” feature for more depth
Video editing features for on-the-fly editing
Photo and video geotagging
Large-scale video in H.264, m4v, .mp4, and .mov formats
Audio playback in AAC, Protected AAC, MP3, MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV
Headphone standard that includes microphone, volume controls and a clicker
PVC-free handset
