20 years, more than 150 releases, and still only 13 employees. All with worldwide impact -- that's enough for street cred in any business. For Merge Records, it's their life story.

Timed to coincide with the yearlong 20th anniversary feast that Merge Records has going on (Merge XX, Score!) all year long, Our Noise: The Story of Merge Records chronicles the back story of a small label with big dreams. And I thought it was the pictures that got small.

John Cook (Gawker) talked with label founders Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance to get the noise on how Merge got started, what kept them going, and how they became "the little label that got big and stayed small." Our Noise: The Story of Merge Records was just released by Algonquin Books.
