The Flaming Lips complete reworking of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon became available via iTunes as of December 22nd, and was available on other download sites starting on December 29th, and is bound to be part of All Tomorrow's Parties "Don't Look Back" series next year (although unconfirmed). The Lips worked with Stardeath and the White Dwarfs on the project, and it features appearances by both Peaches and Henry Rollins.
We can expect a large-scale tour in 2010, although the band is revamping their patented approach to the live show spectacle that they've become known for. They want to move forward with some new elements, while keeping some of the staples of the old.
“It’s kind of redone in the way a city is redone. There’s some great old structures you never want to tear down, and you take chances next to it and you build a new futuristic museum. I would never want people to think that if you saw us three years ago, what we’re doing now has nothing to do with that,” said Wayne Coyne when speaking to LA Times.
He's pretty sure that the Flaming Lips crowd is up for the new approach.
“I think our audience would forgive us for going out in the further regions of whatever we could think of,” Coyne says. “But I don’t think we’d be worthy of being forgiven if we didn’t do that. They’re giving us the freedom, the encouragement, the money and the time to say, ‘Go somewhere where no other band could go, and come back and tell us what it was like.’”
