|The ever-inventive Tricky is set to release his latest album on September 27th with Mixed Race. It promises a global set of influences (UK, Jamaica, the US, North Africa and France) as well as a wide range of musical styles; Trick-ola always brings a diverse set of influences to his songs.
Tricky says that he's taken on personality issues that have chased him throughout his career and is hitting them straight on now.
"Every album is a learning experience and this is concentrated music, there’s no dilution. I’m comfortable in my own skin now, comfortable with being in the light," said Tricky.
"I used to hide in the shadows when I played live, now I perform. I used to hate doing interviews, now I feel honoured that people would be interested in what I have to say."
So now we get the full-on Trick experience, untethered, raw and visceral. What's been stopping you, Trick? Maxinquaye was like the gushing of the dam, and everything after that was like a focusing on a certain part of your gig. Mixed Race looks like an effort to take that original approach in a new way.
Take the song Murder Weapon, embedded above for listening. We see some of the smoothness that Tricky has to offer, with multiple vocalists, the intertwining of various musical styles from an almost Caribbean pop sound to vampy guitar riffs to the endless build up of intensity throughout the song.
"I’ve spent my life going between cultures; Mixed Race is about that, and in a very direct way.”
Guest appearances on Mixed Race include Franky Riley, Terry Lynn, Bobby Gillespie, Hakim Hamadouche, Blackman and Tricky's bro Marlon Thaws. Real bro, by blood.
There's always a chance he'll join up with Massive Attack again, too. At least that's what Daddy G said last year.
