“It’s a fantastically exciting time for UK music, which means the 2010 Prize should be a real cracker,” said Lauren Laverne.
The Mercury Music Prize is open to any albums released by British and irish artists between July 2009 and July 2010. They'll announce the winner at an award show September 7th.
It's always going to be relevant, it's for music lovers so it's not a straightforward sort of pop chart. It's what happened to come out, what stories are being told and what's new and what's not new, and what's actually good. I like it, " said Corinne Bailey Rae when speaking to Billboard.
The band Foals were tricked out of a day off in Spain to attend the naming ceremony. They thought they were going to do a publicity interview, and ended up at Mercury Prize ceremony instead.
"We were tricked by the people who work for us into thinking we were here for some other reason. We were in Spain and we had two days off, but they told us to fly back to do some press. We were kind of angry, so now it's made the trip worthwhile," said YannisPhilippakis when speaking to NME.
