It's the Summer of ... Animal Collective side projects!

Animal Collective member Avey Tare (Dave Portner) has just announced plans to release a solo album this Fall, titled Down There. It will be released on Animal Collective's own Paw Tracks label on October 26th.

I have to admit that every time a band starts spinning off solo projects (see Panda Bear's single series and album release for this Summer/Fall), I have to ask: is Animal Collective in break up mode? It's purely a guess at this point, but multiple side projects by band members is either a sign of band members moving on after a band has stopped existing, or just an opportunity for the members to flex their creative muscle on other projects while the central band takes a *collective* break.

“There have been times in the past when I’ve thought we were done. So I don’t know, this could be it. I don’t expect it to be, I should say, but you never know,” said other Animal Collective member Panda Bear when speaking to BBC's 6Music back in March about the band's current holding pattern.

So what's next? a Paul McCartney and wings-style expansion of the Animal Collective Unconscious? A regrouping in a year or two as a fresh start? Time will tell.

In other Animal Collective news, their film ODDSAC has now been added to the Netflix library, so you can get your groove on with your own private screening of the film.
