Hauschka (aka Volker Bertelmann), the German Prepared Piano guy who experiments with his instruments more than Pink Floyd or Sonic Youth did back in their respective days, is set to release a new album this fall with the arrival of Foreign Landscapes on October 12 and 25 on the 130701 imprint of FatCat Records.

In the past, Volker deconstructed the sonic quality of his music by changing the piano, i.e. modifying to his liking. He worked in the spirit of John Cage or Henry Cowell to deconstruct the music on a wholistic level in order to create something entirely new sounding.

He's offering the track "Madeira" to show what the new Hauschka experience is like.

But now, Hauschka has moved on (or progressed) to a more orchestrated approach. Not wanting to be just the Prepared Piano guy forever, he's taken on the 12-piece string and wind ensemble from San Francisco’s Magik*Magik Orchestra and worked them into the new album. It was recorded at at John Vanderslice's Tiny Telephone Studio in San Francisco.

FatCat Records describes his recording/writing process this way, "Clamping wedges of leather, felt or rubber between the strings; preparing the hammers with aluminium paper or rough films; placing crown corks on the strings, weaving guitar strings around the piano's guts, or pasting them down with gaffa tape."
