What's in a name? A lot, apparently. The New Pornographers have had a show cancelled at a Christian College in Michigan, based on the fact that the college couldn't get past the band's name.
Unable to see past the literal interpretation of the name The New Pornographers, Calvin College in Grand Rapids has decided to cancel an October show because they were afraid that they would actually be associated with pornography (as if a Christian college would actually be doing that).
"... after weeks of discussion and consideration, the irony of the band's name was impossible to explain to many. The band's name, to some, is mistakenly associated with pornography. Consequently, Calvin, to some, was mistakenly associated with pornography. Neither the college nor the band endorses pornography," reads the announcement from the college.
So there you have it. Calvin College is unable to stand up to incorrect crticism of its intentions, and is worried about being associated (incorrectly) with pornographers, so Calvin College has acted fearfully and cancelled the show. The people who booked the show are fans, and respect the musical and artistic integrity of the band, but can't win the battle in convincing their culture that the band simply has nothing to do with pornogaphy. So much for community leadership from Calvin College. |
