This week we see the 2010 CMJ Marathon happen in New York as the annual end-of-year music convention/festival/party that shows us what music we'll be listening to in the new year.
And it's big. Bands for this year's CMJ include Four Tet, Helmet, Dean & Britta, The Drums, DeVotchka, UNKLE, Black Sheep, Corin Tucker Band and Franz Nicolay, among a huge list of others. Check out the festival overview for a complete lineup.
The CMJ Marathon Film Festival includes titles like LOVE & OTHER DRUGS with Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway, SON OF MORNING with Heather Graham and Danny Glover, as well as MUSIC, CIRCUS MAXIMUS, IMOGEN HEAP and INSIDE OUT.
The CMJ daytime panels and workshops feature CMJ's ever-inventive names, like "The Future of the Music Business? Really?," "A Camera And Some Balls; How To Shoot Rockstars" and "Reality Killed The Video Star."
One of the founding festivals of modern music festivals, the CMJ Music Marathon is put on by the College Music Journal, a long-standing publication of alternative music. CMJ has been publishing long enough to have written about alternative music when it was still an alternative to the mainstream.
This year's festival will be the 30th anniversary of the CMJ Marathon. It takes place October 19 - 23 in New York City. CMJ was one of the first to champion the multi-club, urban setting music festival that we see today in SXSW and Lollapalooza.
