It appears that 2011 will be the year of Soundgarden, with the band taking a more modern and up-to-date view of how to work the Soundgarden vibe out to the masses. When we last left off with the band (excluding last year's reunion), the music world was a completely different world -- major labels and their marketing arms ruled the world, and the web was glimmer in some geek's eye.

Now Soundgarden is looking to renew things with the release of their first-ever live album with Live on I5 (available on Mar. 22), and update the Soundgarden name for 2011. Soundgarden is also raiding the vault for more back catalog songs in the form of rare Soundgarden b-sides and previously unreleased music.

"The band were in talks about attending to our catalogue and merchandise, which had been neglected over the past decade. We wanted an e-commerce profile and we'd never maintained the website we had, and wanted to start a new one. We wanted to take advantage of the way the market had changed — iTunes, Facebook and so on, and put out the records we always promised we'd put out," Thayil told Toronto radio station CFNY-FM in an interview.

It also appears that that Soundgarden has been getting back together for sessions, playing as a full band again to see what kind of a vibe happens. They obviously don't want to yell out "NEW SOUNDGARDEN ALBUM" if the magic is gone, so they seem to be playing it smart and not forcing the new material thing. Maybe we'll see a new Soundgarden album of new material in 2012?
