Spotify Might Have Over 1 Million Users After One Month

The Spotify U.S. launch encountered some hurdles in the first month, but Spotify seems to be taking the good, the bad and the ugly well as they might have just reached a milestone: 1 million users in the U.S. The report comes from Glenn Peoples at Billboard, who said that "One industry executive estimates the popular music service, which launched in the U.S. in mid-July, has amassed at least one million total users in just three weeks."

Some dispute the Spotify number, like Peter Kafka at AllThingsD. Today he's putting the Spotify user count at 1.4 million users for the free service, with 175,000 paying subscribers. This all just one month after the Spotify launch.

If the 1.4 million users is accurate, it's surely good news for Spotify when they need it. They've been faced with a tracking cookie that secretly tracks users even when they try to disable it, plus a patent infringement lawsuit landed on their doorstep shortly after the Spotify U.S. launch. It's not clear whether Spotify knew what they were getting into with the tracking cookie or whether they were blindsided by Kissmetrics, who provides the cookie technology to Spotify and a host of other companies.
