French streaming music service Deezer is going big-time global, starting with the UK expansion before moving off into Italy, Spain and Germany, which make the Deezer expansion sound more like a meeting of the European finance ministers, but Deezer is a ll about music. And they're not broke like Europe. They're even thinking about expansion into Turkey, and that was once almost considered part of Europe!
With a total user base of 20 million, and 1.4 million paying subscribers, Deezer already holds an audience as big as U.S. heavyweights Rhapsody and Spotify. Deezer is planning on U.S. expansion soon, but will probably hit Mexico before the U.S. I think the Deezer global strategy is to become such a big international force that there's no way the U.S. major labels can play licensing games with them.
“We had both a local and a global objective in launching here first. We already had licenses in place in France. The next stage for the UK was to negotiate similar contracts for the UK market. The third phase, which we’re in the process of competing now, was to negotiate with almost all the same labels globally. With the global record companies, you can do that pretty much from London. So it was important that the UK be our first springboard out of France,” said UK managing director Mark Foster when speaking with paidContent.
