The last-ever Sonic Youth show? Maybe ... at least the last Sonic Youth show for this tour. Last night's performance in Sao Paulo, Brazil at the SWU Music & Arts Festival has brought to everyone's attention that it's the last show of the tour, and given the recent split of Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon, everyone seems to think that it's the final Sonic Youth show ... ever. The rain at the beginning of the performance adds more darkness to that idea -- the gloomy, rainy FINAL SONIC YOUTH SHOW. Maybe, except for the fact that if we're all finding out about the Sonic Youth couple's split in recent weeks, chances are they've been on the decline for a long time and have still managed to release albums and tour.
It's still COMPLETELY possible that they could exist as Sonic Youth the band. What seems most likey for now is that they'll break for other things, Thurston Moore has just announced a fresh set of tour dates and Lee Renaldo just announced his solo album last week. People can still exist in a band despite no longer being in a relationship with each other as a working band. Time will tell.
As for the show, it's a lot of older, classic material as Slicing Up Eyeballs points out with a convenient set list, and by saying "The band played a dozen tracks, new and old, ending with a 10-minute run through “Teen Age Riot” that, appropriately, dissolved into waves of noise and feedback."
