YouTube Channels Redesign Uses Google+ For Finding YouTube Videos

The new YouTube Channels redesign allows for a bigger and better YouTube video experience that ties in the new Google+ social network and improved YouTube channel search with customizable channels.

The YouTube channels live in the middle column of the YouTube homepage, with popular YouTube channels on the left side and recommended videos on the right. You can link your Google+ or Facebook profile in the left column and keep tabs on what your peeps are watching, to receive recommendations on new YouTube videos. "Trending" and "Popular" channels allows you to see what's going viral and what's just emerging.

It's all about video discovery and findability, which can be challenging in a world full of digital noise and clutter. The YouTube blog laid this idea out by saying "Today we're launching an improved Channel design focused on what matters most: helping users find great videos."

This builds on the YouTube Cosmic Panda redesign of the YouTube channel template from earlier this year. The goal is to make YouTube.com a better destination, a living room experience as much as a mobile and desktop experience. This is one more stepping stone in the Google TV vs Apple TV battle that evolves week after week right in front of us. WSJ points out that Google wants to tie in other Google products like Gmail while still keeping the design clean.

You can subscribe to YouTube channels directly from any YouTube video that you’re watching. In an effort to tie in to the Google+ social network, you can access YouTube videos with a YouTube icon at the top of the Google+ page, create a YouTube playlist and put it on your Google+ profile. People can then find your YouTube videos via the Google+ Circles feature.

YouTube Live brought the addition live streaming video channels last year, with things like the Coachella webcast and Bonnaroo webcast being big first time YouTube channel experiences that tapped into the on-demand live stream video format. We should keep an eye on the Viacom appeal of the court's decision on YouTube copyright infringement, as it will have a big impact on any video experience in the future.
