Matador Records announced their "Singles Going Home Alone" subscription series last week, as a way to release new music. Although they're not the first indie label to do a singles club dedicated to the almighty 7" single, Matador is using it as way to extend the label's repertoire beyond it's traditional brand of indie rock bands. Consider the first single: Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks and L.A. Guns -- L.A. Guns being a band you might not expect from Matador, but part of an interesting new approach to an old idea -- using the singles series to extend the vision of the recording label into new territory. Even labels get to do side projects, too.
Singles Going Home Alone shows a renewed focus on the way we consume music right now, as a single one-off rather than always having to be an album-oriented. Dig the single! Don't get locked in the old cliche argument that the album is dying and we have to "save" the album, it's possible that by trying to preserve a dying concept we could be preventing ourselves from moving forward. The Matador series also includes releases from OBN III’s and The Men. It kicks off in January and will also have three yet-to-be-announced titles as the year goes on.
