iPad 3 Release Announcement on Mar. 7 Date, 4G and A6 Rumors

iPad 3 Release Announcement on Mar. 7 Date, 4G and A6 Rumors

February 14, 2012

The iPad 3 release date is now widely rumored to be on Mar. 7, 2012; or to be more precise, that’s the day of the iPad 3 announcement at a special event in San Francisco to launch the new iPad. The iPad 3 release date could be as soon as a week after that, according to AllThingsD who cites previous iPad announcement / release cycles. Other big ticket news items that are of-the-moment are 4G LTE capabilities, Retina Display, an A6 processor with quad-core capabilities, rumors of a smaller iPad that we heard so much about earlier this year ... the iPad Mini or so-called iPad 4. More about this below, along with iPad 3 features and specs. First, the reason why Apple CEO Tim Cook thinks the iPad is what it is based on today’s comments at a Goldman Sachs Technology & Internet conference:

“The reason the iPad’s ramp has been so large in my view is that the iPad has stood on the shoulders of everything that came before it — the iTunes store, the iPhone. People trained on these products so by the time the iPad launched it was intuitive to use. I gave one to my mother and she knew how to use it, like this, just from watching the commercial” he said, according to AllThingsD.

iPad 3 Specs

The iPad 3 might include 4G LTE capabilities on through Verizon Wireless and AT&T according to news from the Wall Street Journal. This theory has been cooking for a while and is building momentum. There’s also the idea of a new A6 processor with quad-core capabilities, although the quad-core feature is hotly contested right now. iPad 3 rumors include an HD camera in front, with an 8 megapixel camera on the back; and the emergence of iOS 5.1 with newly optimized Siri capabilities.

Other iPad 3 specs include a smaller iPad we heard so much about earlier this year. Often called the iPad mini or iPad 4, it's believed to be working towards a Fall release date. The new iPad screen is reportedly 8 inches as opposed to the 9.7 inch screen on the current iPad. WSJ also published a new article with the emergence of a story on the testing of a smaller iPad screen. Technology Business Research analyst Ezra Gottheil told Computerworld that it's been in the works for a while.

"I believe that's always been in the plan. Actually that's a good form factor for some users, and although they will also charge a premium above other similar-sized tablets, they want to protect that price flank." He added that he'd like to see an extra wireless bluetooth keyboard to go with a smaller iPad by saying "I think something like that would be an important peripheral for students." He also believes that the iPad price for older models will go down to $400 and did not comment on the iPad 3 price.

This could also be the iPad 3 vs. the iPad 2, as in: will the new iPad be an iPad 2s or an iPad3? The Apple iPhone 5 release date last year for an iPhone 4 successor turned out to be the iPhone 4s. The iPad 3 release date for 2012 could be an Ipad 2s, or some variation.

iPad 3 Features

iPad 3 features are widely believed to include a higher resolution display known as Retina Display. A new A6 processor could allow for enhanced capabilities around Siri, which was introduced with the iPhone 4s and iOS 5. Siri seems like a big part of Apple’s future in the iPhone, iPad and even Apple TV, so it makes sense that Siri would evolve with each new iteration of iOS and how it plays out on the iPad and iPhone. We can also foresee that iCloud and iTunes would evolve as well, so it should be interesting to see how that plays out.
