The demise of CBGB in New York was lamented by pretty much, well everybody except the Bowery Residents Committee. There was talk by CBGB founder Hilly Kristal of bringing the club back in some way before his untimely death. That day has finally come. CBGB is now going to return as the newly-minted CBGB Festival. With a tagline of "Get Ready. Get Loud. Get Heard," the CBGB Festival will happen over the dates of July 4 - 8.
There's little information available on the CBGB website right now, other than a link to Sonicbids, where you can apply for a slot in the CBGB Festival. It looks like they're planning a huge show, estimating an audience of 500,000-1,000,000 according to the Sonicbids listing. They're making it open to a variety of genres, true to the form of the original club, with some of the genres including "Alternative, Americana, Avant-garde, Bluegrass, Blues, Classic Rock, Country, Folk, Funk, Goth, Jam Band, Jazz, Latin, Metal, Pop, Punk, Reggae, Rock, Singer/Songwriter, and World. It's a CBGB NYC party, all right.
"Named for the greatest rock-n-roll venue in the world; they proudly introduce the first Annual CBGB Festival. Experience four energy-fueled days & nights of music, rock-n-roll films, insider-industry workshops, and intimate storytelling; all LIVE, all in New York City. CBGB has defined music and culture for generations of people around the world. Universally recognized as the birthplace of punk, CBGB continues to define new music and popular culture by fostering live performances & personal expression from artists around the city and across the globe," reads the announcement.
