New this week is the second full-length album from Lotus Plaza (aka Lockett Pundt's project) titled Spooky Action at a Distance (Kranky Records). Many listeners will recognize the Mr. Pundt as the guitar player in Deerhunter, but he's oh so much more. As Lotus Plaza's chief architect, he crafts shimmery crystalline guitar pop, the kind our "elders" listened to in the 80s as "college rock." This boils down to good ol' melody + occasionally cranked electric guitars...a real take the edge off a spring afternoon buzz kind of sound.
"Monoliths" is a wide angle lens jam. Hazy notions of vocalizing in the sunset wrap the voice in the pocket of big chime guitars. This track is a rocker. I say crank the latest Kranky and follow Lotus Plaza as they will no doubt continue to evolve.
