Revivalist acidheads Brian Jonestown Massacre are back with a new album titled, Aufheben. The album was recorded in Berlin and features a host of musicians joining Anton Newcombe's musical trip, including original member Matt Hollywood. New song "I Wanna Hold Your Other Hand" is classic BJM to my ears. Psychedelic guitar riffs, lava lamp vocals, and a general "groovy" rock band sound, this will please longtime followers and newcomers alike. Plus its title is a pun on a classic Beatles song...somewhere Noel Gallagher is thinking, "why didn't I write that?"
One of the best "rockumentaries" I've ever seen is called Dig! and its truly an amazing viewing experience recommended to those interested in seeing the intense inner workings of demented rockers. I'm not an uber fan of BJM, but after seeing that movie (which chronicles BJM madman leader peyote child Newcombe as he acts a-fool and records music while alienating friends, bandmates, and the Dandy Warhols) I've enjoyed hearing new music from whatever incarnation of BJM happens to be around at any given time. This new song is a lot like they're previous tunes - not great, not terrible, but sometimes an inconsistent consistency is welcome.
