The Polaris Music Prize announced their long list for 2012 today, with names you might expect (Drake, Feist, Handsome Furs, Japandroids) and some new names like Grimes, Cadence Weapon and Yukon Blonde.

So here's the story for the Polaris Music Prize as it will play out for the rest of the year. It starts today with the announcement of the long list, then 200+ writers, editors, producers and media people will form the jury pool to make their 5 picks from the long list. From there, the votes will be counted, worked into the Polaris Prize Short List, and will be announced on July 17 in Toronto. After that, it's all about the Polaris Gala in Toronto on September 24 where they'll announce the Polaris Music Prize winner, who gets a giant check for $30,000

"The year's list deliciously illustrates the burgeoning sense of community in our jury. Almost half of the selections on this list were the direct result of passionate recommendations made by individual members to their peers. We hope the ultimate result of this dialogue will likewise inform the taste of adventurous music lovers from Canada and the world," said Polaris Founder and Executive Director Steve Jordan.

Other Polaris Music Prize winners include Arcade Fire (2011) Karkwa (2010), Fucked Up (2009) Caribou (2008), Patrick Watson (2007) and Final Fantasy (2006).

The winner receives $30,000 (Cash-money!), judged solely on artistic merit, without regard to genre or record sales. The Polaris Music Prize is awarded to the best full-length Canadian album released from June 1, 2011 to May 31, 2012. They raised the amount of the Polaris Prize last year from $20,000 to $30,000.
