BUZZMEDIA has bought SPIN magazine in an abundance of names with capital letters and the kind of momentum that has made BUZZMEDIA the fourth largest publisher of digital content for music. They've gone a buying rampage lately -- check out all the sites you visit that are owned by BUZZMEDIA. You might be surprised enough to use all capital letters in your reaction: Stereogum, Idolator, Hype Machine, Pure Volume, Brooklyn Vegan, AbsolutePunk, Buzznet, Concrete Loop, Gorilla vs. Bear, Pop Matters, Punk News, RCRD LBL and XLR8R. Been to any of these? Now they've acquired the print edition of SPIN as well as the iPad Play app and events business.
I'll spare everyone the canned CEO press release quotes and get to the heart of the matter: the online music area and the technology sector in general is FAT with too many web sites, businesses and playas, so don't be surprised to see some get bought out, fade away, or rust (props to Neil Young). SPIN is likely to keep doing what it's been doing, as all of the other BUZZMEDIA sites have been. It's hard to tell if the goal is just to be the next big collection of music web sites or whether there's just a buying of competitors here, I guess time will tell. The whole group of web sites is clocking 120 million unique monthly visitors.
