Clinic are releasing a new full length album on November 12/ 13 called Free Reign. It's the first new music since they released Bubblegum and you have free reign to listen the the album sampler below. It sounds like a lot of the great normal Clinic sounds, but there's a decidedly subdued twist to these tracks, whereas some of their music in the past has had sort of a visceral edge to it. Maybe the band is mellowing? Either way, new sounds from Clinic are a welcome thing any day of the week.
Clinic worked in Liverpool to produce the album themselves, and Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never) stepped into do some of the mixing. It will arrive in CD, vinyl and download formats, and also includes what they're calling a limited edition "UFO format" complete with a glow in the dark flying disc. Wig out.
The press release goes out of its way to stress that it's the same Clinic sounds we love, but not a boring rehashing of the Clinic vibe: "The junkshop-trawling analogue fetishism of the warm, smoky instrumentation that gives their songs such a vividly placeable sense of mood and atmosphere; the surrealist bent of Blackburn's lyrics - so steeped in their own personal mythology - and the band's over-riding commitment to never straying into the realm of the obvious or complacent are all long-standing elements of Clinic's work that are furthered, perfected even, on Free Reign."
