REVIEW: Bob Mould - "The Descent"

Bob Mould is as Mouldy as ever on his new single "The Descent" from his forthcoming studio album Silver Age (Merge - Sept. 4th). "The Descent" is everything Mould fans want: loud ringing guitars, tightly built vs-ch-vs structure, melodically singsongy, and above all GOOD ROCK. His recent reliving of his Sugar catalog surely plays into his return to the guitar-bass-drums approach that characterize his most loved tunes. Gone are the electronica flourishes (at least for now) replaced with wig flipping dynamism. This tune will delight longtime fans, pure and simple. The vocals sound as amazing as the music here too. My hope is that younger listeners will hear this jam and seek out Mould's vast (and unusually high quality) body of work. I can't wait for the full record.
