Paper Bag Records is releasing a free download covers compilation titled Paper Bag Records vs. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders of Mars and their roster of artists have some giant glam boots to fill. David Bowie's 1972 glitter rock masterpiece about a space alien rock star's rise and demise is as stupid as it is awesomely on target. The album still sounds great and who doesn't love Kabuki theater turned up to eleven?

Yamantaka//Sonic Titan have chosen to cover non-(Ziggy) album single "John, I'm Only Dancing." According to Paper Bag, "YT//ST was founded in late 2007 by performance artists alaska B and Ruby Kato Attwood, born from the ashes of the late Lesbian Fight Club." So, now that the bio is outta the way, what to make of this cover? It's a fairly decent cover that ups the "dance" vibe of the title with percussion heavy thump and suitably Mick Ronson-esque electric guitar. The female vocal doesn't alter the supposed homosexual theme (if we're to believe that was Bowie's intention in the first place), but it adds a menage-a-trios vibe that works pretty well with the groove. Sexy!
