|It's been thirty long years since The Jam released their classic album The Gift, and to honor that date, they're doing up a box set special offering with all sorts of extras. Officially titled The Gift: 30th Anniversary ('The Gift and beyond...') the set includes 3 CDs and one DVD, which entails a remastering of the original album, a concert from Wembley in December of the album's original release year of 1982 and an entire CD of unreleased music that also includes alternate tracks of songs and demos. The DVD includes performances from the Trans-Global Unity Express tour. It's your usual box set grab bag of offerings but looks great all the same.
"I was very proud of it -- I thought it was another advance on what we'd done before," said Paul Weller on the original release of The Gift. The press release adds " it had a lot to say about where music was going, what had happened to the righteous fires lit by punk, and how to remain relevant and vital when music was taking some very wrong turns indeed. The challenge it answered was simple enough: if blaring guitars and rock poses had run out of road, what could embody the kind of passion that The Jam were all about?"
