It was just released digitally last week and is in stores this week, and Daphni is the latest big project from Dan Snaith of Caribou. The album is called JIAOLONG, and features nine songs of unpredictable sounds and melody when electronic music and it’s poppy variant EDM are becoming overprogrammed and falling victim to the button-pusher aesthetic. JIAOLONG gets creative by trying to bring a sense of the unpredictable to what can sometimes be an overlooped and stale and restricting genre: electronic music.
“Electronic instruments are notoriously uncontrollable, unpredictable, and recalcitrant! I’ve been building a modular synthesizer, which plays a prominent role on this album. It growls or screams when I don’t expect it to. Nudging one dial changes the sound so drastically that I’ll never get the original sound back. It’s like improvising with another musician, and its voice is all over this music,” said Dan Snaith about his approach.
