| Although everybody’s probably completely sick of politics at this point, Sinkane’s new video for the song “Runnin’” reminds us all of what used to be great about politically charged music. As the 70’s gave way to the eighties, a whole host of bands were “political” bands, meaning that they were standing up for social issues in their music and trying to fight political corruption. Midnight Oil, New York and British punk all were part of that. Sinkane is the name taken by Ahmed Gallab, who’s worked with Caribou, of Montreal, Yeasayer and Born Ruffians before going all out on Sinkane with other band members.
Sinkane takes that vibe and runs with it in the video for “Runnin’,” staging a political assassination attempt of a leader in a third world country. The red color and the quick-action motion treatments heighten the drama. Directed by Philip Di Fiore, and the Sinkane album Mars is out now on DFA Records.
