Stones Throw Records seems to be tapping into the cassette vibe, with the release of the new Vex Ruffin music on tape. They just announced a cassette compilation of music with Leaving Records, and now this. Vex Ruffin is a different cat of different sorts, he's more of a straight-up garage rock, indie rock kind of sound. He's also into much more experimental stuff ... Peter Murphy and New Order are cited as influences, but most of his music is direct and literal. He *stalked* Peanut Butter Wolf with a demo, and PB Wolf called Vex and he thought it was a joke ... until it got real.
“It was kind of a fluke that I listened. I just liked the drawing on the cover so I decided to check it out. I called the phone number on the CD and Vex thought I was his friend playing a practical joke,” said.
To show the more experimental side, check out the video for "Crash Course," it's more Sebadoh-style punk rock in its tone.
