It's time to rethink that old iPhone game: the iPhone 6 rumors and iPhone 6 release date guessing game. This week got the year off to a fast and furious start -- iPhone 6 rumors about new features and what the iPhone 6 release date will be proved to be rampant; with design concept video and renderings, iOS 7 surfaced in the wild and the iPhone 6 release date already has some target dates.
iPhone 6 rumors
iPhone 6 rumors are happening around a number of items: the new operating system iOS 7, new display panel touch screen technology, new colors for the new phone, more screen sizes and an iPhone 6 concept design complete with a video. Let's break em' down one at a time.
The new “Touch On Display” panels from Innolux are one of the iPhone 6 rumors that’s supposedly going into the iPad 5 release, so we can chalk up a point of consistency for the iPad 5 / iPhone 6 rumors crowd. This is centered around the IGZO ( indium gallium zinc oxide) technology that provides a brighter, thinner display while using less battery power. Innolux is supposedly licensing the IGZO technology from Sharp.
China Times dropped word on this by saying (roughly translated through Google Translate) "Apple intends to switch to other touch technology in the next generation of mobile phones. Rumored Apple to find on the Innolux cooperation, the Innolux development TOD (Touch On Display) outside embedded (on cell) touch panel has been sent to the kind of certification, is expected to first entry to the Apple iPhone supply chain."
The iOS 7 operating system is probably less a part of the iPhone 6 rumors and more a part of Apple reality, as many people pointed out this week. New iOS testing and releases are an annual happening with Apple, so the only real iPhone 6 news here might be that Apple is so prominently making it easy to find. The new iOS usually debuts at the June Worldwide Developers Conference. The Next Web points out that "Currently under development, traces of Apple’s new iPhone and iOS software have begun surfacing in app usage logs." This means that people are testing iPhone apps to see how they'll work in iOS 7. "From the developer logs that we have seen, the app requests originate from an IP address on Apple’s Cupertino campus, suggesting that members of Apple’s software development and app teams are compatibility testing some of the more popular or well-known applications already on the App Store," The Next Web article goes on to say.
Topeka Capital analyst Brian White dropped a juicy report this week, fueling iPhone 6 rumors by saying "We believe there is still plenty to look forward to at Apple, including the potential for greater choices (i.e., colors, sizes) around the next iPhone in 2013, combined with accelerating momentum with the iPad mini and continued strength with the iPad franchise at large."
New iPhone 6 colors are being guessed at as yellow, blue, pink, white and silver. This eventually happened with the iPod, so this iPhone 6 rumor seems plausible. Screen sizes are rumored to be 3.5″ and 5″ display panels, which falls inline with the iPhone 4s and iPhone 5 sizes. Since Apple is a global retailer, this again seems plausible as different regions of the world demand different sizes based on local culture and hand sizes. White said last week that in China there is an "insatiable demand" for the new iPad Mini.
We'll also need to entertain the theory that this could be a sideways iPhone release, and it could be for an iPhone 5s as Apple did with the iPhone 4s. Entirely possible, completely unpredictable. The iPhone 6 vs iPhone 5s idea will be one to watch as we roll through the first half of 2013.
iPhone 6 Release Date
So this all leads up to: what’s the iPhone 6 release date? Apple blew the traditional release cycle on a number of products in the Fall, reupping on the new iPad 4 and introducing the iPad Mini alongside other computers. The iPhone 5 release date happened at the same time, so will the iPhone 6 release date be at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June alongside the iOS 7 release date, or will the iPhone 6 release happen in the Fall again, creating a one-year product cycle? Weigh in with your guesses below. My guess so far seems easy to predict: the iPhone 6 release date will happen in the Fall, as a one-year product cycle. Granted, this is based on what we all know now in early January, so this theory will evolve over the year based on any new information. It's just too early to tell at this point.
iPhone 6 Concept Video and iPhone 6 Concept Design
One of the best parts of the iPhone rumors are always what goes on with product designers around the globe. This week, Italian designer Federico Ciccarese created his first new rendering of a iPhone 6 concept design, offering up the gorgeous renderings below. He even created an iPhone 6 concept video based around his designs, which show sketches and photographic mock ups. Ciccarese is of course on the prowl for a job offering as a product designer, saying on his web site "If you like my work I will be happy to receive some interesting job offer." Check out the rest of his iPhone 6 concept designs in the renderings below as well as the video.
