This is the album that kicked it all into gear for the Chili Peppers ... sure they'd been around for years, breaking out in the Los Angeles scene before becoming a bigger west coast band and underground phenomenon. Mother's Milk was the loud, audacious and bombastic good time that brought the Red Hot Chili Peppers into a national spotlight and broke them big. And that album cover, oh that album cover.

From the opening of Flea's bass slaps to the crunchy guitar stomp from John Frusciante along with Chad Smith's skins bashing in the opening song "Good Time Boys," the album had a huge impact right off the bat. They jump into the equally audacious Stevie Wonder cover of "Higher Ground" with the second song, and the album rolls on. "Magic Johnson" was a weird, chant-like deviation with hip-hop leanings at a time when hip-hop and rock were colliding in all sorts of ways.

"Knock Me Down" was a return to more of a standard convention, almost a pop song. "Fire" was another cover (Jimi Hendrix) that the band chili-fried in their own sound, making the song their own as much as they claimed Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground." Sexy Mexican Maid told the sultry tale of escapades with the maid and redefined the whole notion of housecleaning. "Johnny, Kick A Hole In The Sky" closes out the album with a worked-up revue of funk and a southern California vibe.
