Sometimes music seems just oh so right, right from the beginning. Dominic Maker and Kai Campos connected in 2008 and came together as Mount Kimbie, an experimental electronic music project that leaned into different electronic variants as far apart as minimal and dubstep. They gave us Crooks and Lovers in 2010 are about to release Cold Spring Fault Less Youth at the end of this month.
Their music is always fresh and exciting, always goes to unexpected places, as does the song “You Took Your Time,” which you can listen to above. It features King Krule guesting on vocals, and is a slow rambling chill track that mixes hip hop with their more experimental side.
If you dig this, try “Blood And Form” and “Made To Stray.” The release date for Cold Spring Fault Less is May 27/28 via Warp Records, or catch them on tour in May and June. "Two years is a long time. Tastes change, what you want out of your life changes, and so on. Naturally, how we want to sound has changed too," said Dominic Maker.
The press release makes the impression that Mount Kimbie have been stepping up their game: “Cold Spring Fault Less Youth combines the electronic sensibilities of the band's debut album Crooks and Lovers but sees Mount Kimbie move out of the bedroom and into a professional studio. Informed by their live shows, Dom and Kai have introduced more live instruments to broaden their sound including drums and horns as well as experimenting with vocals. Unleashing themselves from the confines of dance music, the resulting album feels looser, richer and more enveloping than the duo’s past work, yet still retains that Mount Kimbie sound.”
