The new album Hobo Rocket from Pond is a trip ... in so many ways. It's 60's psychedelic nostalgia, but it's set in a modern indie rock context. The whole album is streaming right now at NPR Music, who said "psychedelic riff-rock is in the midst of a major renaissance." The first song “Xanman” starts the rocket ride on a massive tear, . "Giant Tortoise" rocks in every way possible. Fuzzed-out guitar bliss gives way to lucid solos, which in turn comes back in tightly integrated verse-chorus-verse workouts.
It's everything that's great about the Australian psych scene. Pond and Tame Impala share members and a recording label (Modular People), so it's no surprise that there's an overlap in their sound. It's like the 1970's all over again ... in 2013. Hobo Rocket is due out on August 2nd (AUS), August 5th (UK/EU), August 6th (USA).
