Old school New York meets (sort of) new school New York in an unlikely pairing that actually plays out pretty well -- Elvis Costello & The Roots. They've collaborated on a new album called Wise Up Ghost, and it kicks off great in the first track “Walk Us Uptown.” Costello almost comes off sounding like an early Joe Strummer form The Clash, The Roots do the solid Roots thing with impeccable consistency. The full album Wise Up Ghost from Elvis Costello & The Roots is available as a full album stream from NPR Music.
They gush about the music too, saying "Recorded in a year's worth of experimental sessions after the 59-year-old bard met the band as a guest in its television home, Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, the album sounds like the best of Costello's stuff, and like nothing he's done before. Working with musicians who've figured out how to apply hip-hop principles to a band dynamic, Costello locates himself within that framework to produce some of the most focused and visionary work of his later career."
