Dare yourself to watch the new "Breathless" video from Small Black. It's all in on confronting your fears, watch as the characters all defy the odds in various scenarios. The song is from the album Limits of Desire, which was released earlier this year on JagJaguwar.
Director Nick Bentgen said "Josh and I talked about putting together a vibrant travelogue featuring young people throughout the American South and Southwest. I wanted this video to feel like flipping through a scrapbook of snapshots-- a collage of raw, reckless moments. I drove all over Arizona and Tennessee with a small crew of filmmakers and we chased an experiential, documentary mode of production. We met kids at a rodeo in Arizona and went 4-wheeling with them, we crashed college parties in Memphis, and we got our hostess at a Chinese restaurant to be one of the stars of the video. Small Black's music has an incredibly cinematic sensibility, and we found that tone in the kids we met on the road."
Small Black is slightly lo-fi-ish with programmed drum beats and a sort of understated anthem quality to it. It's like the triumph of the underdog, a well-liked story in these modern times. Now expanded to four-piece band, Josh Hayden Kolenik (keys, vocals), Ryan Heyner (guitar, keys, vocals), Juan Pieczanski (bass, guitar) and Jeff Curtin (drums, percussion) have emerged from bedroom recording, experimental anything goes style into more of a songwriting, deeper level.
