Just when you thought that Dave Grohl's vision for the Foo Fighter was played out: he and the band are working on new material that's “unlike anything we've ever done.”

"We haven't really disclosed exactly what we are doing," he said in an interview  with Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1.

"We're doing something that no-one really knows about and we'll announce pretty soon I think," saiI know what it sounds like and I honestly think the entire concept is really going to take people by surprise and it sounds nuts."

So, given Grohl's interest around studio techniques with his Sound City Real to Reel documentary, it's worth pondering what he means but trying something new: is he working on new studio techniques with Butch Vig and Steve Albini (who are producing the album), or is the band writing songs in a different way?

"We recorded something the other day that's unlike anything we've ever done and it starts with a fuse and then it explodes."

It looks like a number of songs are already underway, as the band posted a photo to its Instagram feed two weeks ago (below with the words "It's Fucking ON."
